Posco International has completed a solar power system in Manaung Island, Myanmar, to provide electricity to around 1,000 households, the firm said Thursday.

The photovoltaic system built by Posco International is a combination of 500 kilowatt power generation and 2,000 kilowatt-hours of energy storage system. It is capable of providing power to around 1,000 households in Manaung Island, Rakhine state situated on the western coast of the nation with about 60,000 inhabitants. 

Through the project, the company expects quality of life in the area to improve with increased sanitary facilities such as public health centers and higher productivity of agriculture and fisheries.

On the day, the Korean trading company held a completion ceremony for the solar power system attended by Posco International CEO Kim Young-Sang, Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi and related ministers.

“With the completion of the solar power system, we are pleased to provide practical support for Myanmar, which has a long relationship with Posco International,” said CEO Kim Young-Sang.

“We also hope to win contracts for Myanmar’s liquefied natural gas import terminal and private power generation business in the future to establish a solid cooperative relationship with the nation in the energy sector.”
