The Royal Asiatic Society’s Korea Branch is running a guided tour of Seoul’s Seochon neighborhood on Saturday from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m.
The tour led by Robert Fouser, who has taught English and foreign language instruction for more than 20 years in Japan and Korea, will explore an area that offers a full range of Korean architecture from the 20th century.
The tour starts in Tongeui-dong, which has a mixture of hanok, Japanese colonial-period houses, and modern museums and galleries.
Following the alleys through Changseong-dong the tour will come to Hyoja-dong, where it will take a look at an attractive example of a mid-20th-century hanok once owned by Shin Ik-hee, a 1950s politician.
The tour will then visit Tongin Market and the newly restored Suseongdong Gyegok, a natural historic site. Participants will also get a look at the first hanok restored under a renovation program that began in 2010.
Participation costs 15,000 won for RASKB members and 20,000 won for non-members. Reservations should be made by Wednesday. For details, see www.raskb.com.
