Informal NKorea-US meeting in Germany

A think tank says North Korean and American delegations have held informal talks in Germany _ talks that come amid tensions over Pyongyang's plans for a long-range rocket launch.

Charles King Mallory, the executive director of the Aspen Institute think tank in Berlin, said Sunday that the informal so-called ``track 2'' dialogue took place over the weekend.

He wouldn't comment on the contents of the talks or who participated in them.

The Aspen Institute last year hosted a North Korean-U.S. meeting in Germany that featured former American officials and had no official U.S. involvement.

North Korea says it plans to fire an observation satellite into orbit. The U.S. says that is a cover to test long-range missile technology and violates U.N. Security Council resolutions. (AP)

"北, 美와 비공식 접촉, 미사일 발사 고수"

일본의 NHK방송은 북한과 미국이 독일에서 접촉했지만 북한이 미사일 발사 계획을 굽히지 않았다고 2일 보도했다.

이 방송은 미국과 북한의 접촉이 독일 동부의 한 도시에서 열린 미국의 싱크탱크가 주최한 세미나에서 비공식으로 이뤄졌으며 북한에서는 리근 외무성 북미국장이, 미국에서는 토머스 피커링 전 국무차관이 참석했다고 전했다.

방송에 의하면 이번 접촉은 지난달 31일부터 이틀에 걸쳐 진행됐으며 양측은 북 한의 핵 문제와 장거리 미사일 발사로 보이는 인공위성 발사 계획에 대해 의견을 교 환했다.

방송은 "구체적인 대화 내용에 대해서는 양측이 기자단의 질문에 답변하지 않았다"고 전했다.

하지만 세미나에 참석했던 독일의 연구자는 "북한이 발사를 중단할 것이라는 징 후는 없었다"면서 "북한에서 중요한 결정을 할 인물은 최고지도자 외에는 없는 만큼 (북한의 생각에) 변화가 없는 것으로 보인다"고 말했다.

한편 미국의 싱크탱크인 아스펜 연구소의 베를린 지부장 찰스 킹 멀로리는 '트랙 2'로 불리는 북미 간 비공식 대화가 지난 주말에 열렸다고 밝혔다.

아스펜 연구소는 작년에도 독일에서 북한과 미국 간 만남을 주선했으며 당시 접 촉에도 미국의 전직 관리들이 참석했었다.
