Heavyweights brace for Bundang showdown

Intense competition expected in Gimhae, Bundang constituencies

Competition for the April by-elections will begin in earnest this week as rival parties have begun to complete the list of their candidates for a race that is largely expected to remap the political landscape ahead of critical elections next year.

Though small in size, the upcoming race is considered especially important for several political big-names who hope to use it as a stepping stone to the presidential elections next year.

Results from the April 27 elections, which will choose three parliamentary, one gubernatorial and six chiefs of smaller administrative units, are also expected to determine the fate of party leaders, who will use the race as a test of their political capacities.

Former and incumbent chiefs of the ruling and the main opposition parties will compete in the Bundang district in Seongnam, expected to be the most heated match.

Sohn Hak-kyu, chief of the main opposition Democratic Party and former Gyeonggi governor, was first to announce his bid for the legislative seat in Bundang, sending the ruling party scurrying to come up with a matching political big name.

Kang Jae-sup, former chairman of President Lee Myung-bak’s Grand National Party, will compete against the opposition party leader, who currently does not have a seat in the parliament and is likely to run for president in a year’s time.

Although residents of Bundang, a relatively well-off region just south of Seoul, usually support the conservative ruling party, preliminary surveys show Kang less than 5 percentage points ahead.

The ruling GNP is especially wary of younger voters, who generally favor its progressive rival.

The GNP has picked Kim Tae-ho, a former prime minister-nominee and ex-governor of South Gyeongsang, as its candidate to run for a legislative seat in Gimhae, also a main battlefield as ex-President Roh Moo-hyun’s hometown.

Although the southeastern region generally favors the ruling party, the former liberal president’s influence and President Lee’s recent cancellation of a plan to build an international airport in Gimhae are anticipated to have a negative impact on the GNP, analysts say.

Many voters think fondly of Roh, Lee’s immediate predecessor, who leapt to his death amid a bribery probe that many see as politically-motivated.

Liberal opposition parties, including the DP and the People’s Participation Party, are striving to agree on a single left-leaning candidate for the district.

Parties will officially register their candidates April 12-13.

분당乙 `손학규-강재섭' 격돌..판세 혼미

`강원 대진표' 오후 확정..여야 총력전 돌입

4.27 재보선 경기 성남분당을 국회의원 보궐선거에서 한나라당 강재섭 전 대표와 민주당 손학규 대표간 `빅매치'가 성사되면서 이지역이 재보선 최대 승부처로 떠올랐다.

전.현직 당 대표가 출마하는 분당을 보선은 내년 수도권 총선의 향배를 가늠하고, 강원지사.경남 김해을 보선에 상당한 영향을 미칠 것으로 보여 전체 재보선 승패의 `저울대'가 될 것으로 예상된다.

한나라당 정희수 사무1부총장은 4일 국회에서 브리핑을 통해 "어제 실시한 분당을 여론조사 경선 결과, 강 전 대표를 한나라당 출마 후보자로 추천키로 의결했다"고 밝혔다.

강 전 대표는 여론조사기관 2곳에서 분당을 유권자 1천600여명(조사기관당 800명)을 대상으로 실시한 여론조사 경선에서 71.2%의 압도적 지지를 받았다고 정 부총장은 전했다.

하지만 한나라당 분당을 공천 신청자 중 박계동 전 국회 사무총장이 여론조사 방식에 이의를 제기하며 경선에 불참함에 따라 그의 무소속 출마 여부가 변수가 되고 있다.

강원지사 보선도 민주당 후보로 이미 최문순 전 의원이 확정된 가운데 한나라당은 이날 당원과 지역주민 3만4천여명이 참여한 국민참여 투표 개표와 여론조사 결과를 종합해 후보를 확정한다.

매머드 선거인단이 참여하는 만큼 결과를 예단할 수 없지만, 이날 오전 현재 엄기영 전 MBC 사장이 앞서고 있는 것으로 알려져 민주당 최 전 의원과의 `MBC 사장 출신들'간 대결이 될 가능성이 높다는 관측이다.

경남 김해을 보선은 지난 2일 김태호 전 경남지사가 한나라당 후보로 확정됐으며, 민주당과 국민참여당간 단일화 여부가 확정됨에 따라 조만간 여야 대진표가 윤곽을 드러낼 전망이다.

이처럼 4.27 재보선에서 여야 거물급 후보들이 출마하면서 전체 재보선 판세는한치 앞을 내다볼 수 없는 혼돈 속으로 빠져들고 있다.

실제로 각종 여론조사 결과, 분당을의 경우 강재섭-손학규 두 후보간 지지율이박스권 내에서 초접전 양상을 보이고 있고, 강원지사 및 경남 김해을도 선거 변수가 많아 시계 제로의 상황이다.

여야 지도부는 이날부터 당을 본격적인 재보선 총력체제로 전환했다. 재보선 결과에 따라 정국 주도권의 향배는 물론, 재보선에서 패배한 당 지도부가 교체될 수도있는 만큼 여야간 양보없는 한판승부가 본격화되고 있다.

한나라당은 안상수 대표를 비롯한 당 지도부가 이날 오후 강원 평창 용평돔에서열리는 강원지사 후보 선출대회에 총출동, 분위기를 띄울 예정이다.

이에 민주당 손학규 대표는 이날 분당을 지역에 머물며 출.퇴근인사를 비롯해 지역 곳곳을 누비며 본격적인 표밭갈이에 돌입한데 이어 오후에는 원주에서 열리는 강원선대위원회 출범식에 참석한다.
