S. Korea men, women earn high seeds in archery

LONDON (Yonhap News) -- South Korean archers were off to a rousing start at the London Olympics Friday, as both men and women secured high seed positions in the ranking rounds held hours before the opening ceremony.

On a cloudy but calm day at the training range at Lord's Cricket Ground here in the host city of the 2012 Summer Games, Im Dong-hyun fired 699 to break his own 72-arrow record by three. He was followed by teammates Kim Bub-min at 698 and Oh Jin-hyek at 690. Their team total of 2,087 was also a world record score, and it gave them the bye to the quarterfinals in the team competition for Saturday.

Thanks to the 1-2-3 finish, the South Korean men will take on the bottom three archers in the opening round of the individual competition Monday, which will feature 64 archers in total.

Later Friday, Ki Bo-bae finished at the top of the women's round with 671. Her teammate Lee Sung-jin also shot 671, but Ki had the tiebreaker edge with 31 shots of perfect 10s, one more than Lee.

Tan Ya-Ting of Chinese Taipei also fired 671 but she put 28 arrows in the 10.

Choi Hyeon-ju, the third member of the Korean team, struggled to a 651 that placed her in 21st place. But the Korean trio still had the highest combined points by a team with 1,993, edging the U.S. team that put up 1,979. Chinese Taipei was third at 1,976.

Ki and Lee should have relatively easier paths in the individual bracket, while Choi could run into a high-ranked archer early in her tournament.

For the male archers, it was business as usual.

"We have the team event starting tomorrow, so I will keep doing my best," Im said, without commenting on his record, as he walked passed by a throng of journalists in the mixed zone.

Kim and Oh, however, declined to speak to the media, simply waving and smiling as they left the range.

Jang Young-sool, head coach of the archery team, refused to make a big deal out of the record-setting performance.

"This was only the preliminary round," he said. "We're supposed to have windy conditions tomorrow. We have to be prepared for that. The archers are in pretty good shape."

The men's individual gold is the only Olympic archery title that has eluded South Korea. The country has grabbed the last three men's team event and the last six women's team competition, plus six of the past seven women's individual events.

Britain's Larry Godfrey, considered the host country's best hope for an archery medal, ranked fourth at 680 points. Brady Ellison, the world's No. 1-ranked archer from the U.S., was 10th at 676.

In the combined scores, France was a distant second behind South Korea at 2,021 points. Gael Prevost had the top individual score for France at 679.

China and the U.S. were tied at 2,019 points, but China claimed third place because its archers combined for 100 shots of perfect 10, one more than Americans.

The top four countries have the byes to the final eight. In the quarters, South Korea will face the winner of the round-of-16 match between Britain and Ukraine.

The South Korean women had a much tighter race than their male compatriots. Khatuna Lorig of the U.S. was just two behind Ki, and just eight points separated the first-place Ki and the seventh-place Carina Christiansen of Denmark.

Jang, the head coach, said the women's team didn't put up the desired scores but he was happy with having the top two archers on his team.

"We have to look past this stage and get ready for the actual tournament," he said. "There's no guarantee the weather will hold up like it did today."

The female squad, as did the men's, earned the bye to Sunday's quarters in the team competition, where it will take on the winner of India-Denmark match in the round-of-16.

절정 컨디션 양궁 대표팀 金 보인다

임동현 랭킹전 세계신기록… 여자단체도 1위로 8강전 직행

한국 남자 양궁 대표팀이 절정을 치는 컨디션을 자랑하며 단체전 금메달 전망을 밝혔다.

대표팀은 27일(현지시간) 영국 런던 로즈 크리켓 그라운드에서 열린 대회 남자단체전 랭킹라운드(순위결정전)에서 경쟁국을 압도했다.

오진혁(현대제철), 임동현(청주시청), 김법민(배재대)은 216발 합계 2천87점을 쏘아 종전 세계기록 2천69점을 무려 18점이나 끌어올렸다.

특히 개인 72발 합계에서 임동현은 699점, 김법민은 698점을 쏘아 종전 세계기록(696점)을 넘어섰다.

세계기록을 작성한 사실이 경기 직후 장내 아나운서를 통해 발표되자 경기장 곳곳에서 탄성이 터져 나왔다.

선수, 지도자, 경기 진행요원들의 입에서는 일제히 "워∼우"하는 소리가 들렸다.

각국 취재진은 휴대전화기를 바로 꺼내 들어 이번 대회 첫 기록수립의 소식을 전하기에 바빴다.

선수들은 비가 추적추적 내리는데도 조용하고 차분하게 최고의 기술, 컨디션, 집중력을 발휘했다.

임동현과 김법민은 72발 가운데 무려 50발을 10점에 꽂았다.

김법민은 10점 구역에서도 정중앙으로 별도 표시가 된 엑스텐(X10) 구역을 26차례나 꿰뚫어 22차례 엑스텐을 기록한 임동현보다 조금 더 나은 집중력을 보여줬다.

한국과 랭킹 라운드 2위인 프랑스의 점수 차는 무려 66점이었다.

선수당 6발씩 24발로 승부를 가리는 단체전 본선은 한 발씩 상대와 교대로 발사하고 화살수도 훨씬 적어 랭킹 라운드 성적과 맞비교할 수는 없다.

컨디션을 비교하는 차원에서 이날 216발 성적을 단체전 24발 성적으로 환산하면 한국은 231.9점으로 한국 다음으로 선전한 프랑스(224.6점)보다 7점이 앞선다.

기술과 컨디션이 누구도 대적할 수 없을 수준임을 알렸으나 본선 대진을 살필 때 방심하기에는 이르다는 관측도 나온다.

한국은 1위로 8강에 직행해 28일 오후 11시 우크라이나와 영국의 승자와 첫 본선 경기를 펼친다.

국제양궁연맹(FITA) 랭킹 5위인 영국은 기량이 만만찮은 데다 주최국이라서 관중 응원에 힘을 얻을 수가 있다.

그리고 4강에서 만날 유력한 상대인 랭킹 1위 미국은 일찌감치 이번 대회에서 한국과 금메달을 두고 다툴 후보로 꼽혔다.

결승전에서 만날 수 있는 상대는 세계랭킹 2위 프랑스, 6위 중국, 9위 이탈리아, 10위 대만, 11위 말레이시아, 14위 멕시코다.

코치진은 선수들이 대진 결정전에서 폭발적으로 선전한 데 흥분해 집중력을 잃어버릴까 걱정하고 있다.

장영술 한국 총감독은 "오늘 경기는 예선에 불과하다"며 "내일 바람이 많이 분다는 예보가 있어 그에 맞게 대비하겠다"고 말했다.

임동현, 오진혁, 김법민도 세계기록 작성에도 별일이 없었다는 듯 일부러 딴전을 피우며 취재구역을 지나쳤다.

기보배(24·광주광역시청)와 이성진(27·전북도청)도 런던올림픽 여자 양궁에서 실전을 무난하게 시작했다.

기보배는 27일(현지시간) 영국 런던 로즈 크리켓 그라운드에서 열린 대회 여자 랭킹라운드에서 72발 합계 671점을 쏘아 1위를 차지했다.

이성진도 기보배와 같은 671점을 기록했으나 10점 화살의 수가 많은 선수가 우위에 서는 방식의 동점 배제의 원칙에 따라 2위가 됐다.

탄야팅(대만)도 671점이었으나 10점 화살수가 가장 적어 3위로 밀렸다.

기보배가 쏜 10점 화살의 수는 31개였고 이성진은 30개, 탄야팅은 28개였다.

최현주(28·창원시청)는 경기 초반에 흔들려 하위권으로 떨어졌으나 후반에 집중력을 되찾아 651점으로 21위가 됐다.

국제양궁연맹(FITA) 랭킹 1위인 디피카 쿠마리는 662점을 얻어 10위로 내려앉았다.

한국은 기보배, 이성진, 최현주의 점수를 합친 단체(216발) 랭킹에서도 1천993 점으로 미국(1천979점), 대만(1천976점), 일본(1천964점)을 제치고 1위에 올랐다.

이에 따라 한국은 4위까지 주어지는 8강 직행 티켓을 틀어쥐었다.

한국은 오는 29일 오후 11시(한국시간) 인도와 덴마크의 16강전 승자와 8강전을 치른다.

준결승에서 만날 수 있는 국가는 멕시코, 일본, 우크라이나, 결승전에서 마주칠 수 있는 나라는 대만, 러시아, 중국, 이탈리아, 영국 등이다.

장영술 한국 총감독은 "여자는 원하는 기록이 나오지 않았지만 결과는 1, 2위였다"며 "최현주가 첫 올림픽이라 자신감이 없었지만 후반에 잘 쏘면서 많이 회복했다"고 말했다.

남자부 랭킹 라운드가 열린 오전과 달리 여자부 경기가 열린 오후에는 바람이 많이 불어 세계기록이나 올림픽 기록은 나오지 않았다. (연합뉴스)
