Two finals, two golds. And all anybody wants to know about Chinese teen swimming sensation Ye Shiwen is whether she’s doping.

After shattering the world record in the 400 individual medley on the opening day of the pool competition at the London Games, the 16-year-old broke her own Olympic record to take the 200 IM title Tuesday.

Ye flashed smiles toward the crowd and sang her national anthem, then walked into a packed and hostile press conference where she faced one question after another over whether she is taking performance-enhancing drugs.

Ye is smaller than most swimmers at her level but has never failed a drug test, and Olympic organizers spent much of the day defending her, saying the suspicions were “crazy” and motivated by jealousy.

“Of course, I think this is a little bit unfair for me, but I was not affected by that,” Ye said in comments translated from Mandarin.

Asked directly whether she had ever doped, she said: “Absolutely not.” She added that she has trained 2 1/2 hours every morning and 2 1/2 hours each afternoon for nine years.

Ye, after the Tuesday night swim, agreed with a suggestion that the speculation was part of a biased campaign against China. She thanked her coaches, teammates and parents for her success.

“They are the people who make me strong,” Ye said. “That‘s why I’m not so affected by the outside noise.” (AP)

中수영 예스원, 도핑의혹 “신경안써”


지난 화요일 중국 여자 수영대표 예스원(葉詩文,16)이 두 번째 금메달을 획득한 이후 도핑관련 의혹이 붉어지고 있다.

올해 16세의 예스원은 화요일 런던 올림픽 수영 200m 개인 혼영 종목에서 세계 신기록을 갈아치우며 400m 개인 혼영 부문에서 세운 세계 신기록 경신 릴레이를 이어갔다.

그러나 예 선수는 경기가 끝난 후 참석한 기자회견에서 운동 능력 촉진과 관련된 약물을 복용하고 있다는 의혹에 대한 질문세례를 받았다.

올림픽 주최 당국에서는 이와 같은 도핑 의혹에 대해 “말도 안 되는 소리”라고 일축했고, 예 선수의 놀라운 성적에 대한 시기에서 비롯된 의견일 뿐이라고 옹호했다.

예 선수는 본인을 둘러싼 의혹에 대해, “부당한 의혹이라 생각하지만 그에 휘둘리지는 않았다,”라며 자신의 의견을 밝혔다.

직접적으로 “약물 복용을 했나?”라는 질문에 대해서도 “절대 아니다,”라고 답하며 지난 9년간 매일 수 시간씩 열심히 운동해온 결과일 뿐이라고 말했다.

예스원 선수는 자신을 위해 애써준 코치진과 팀 동료들, 가족들에게 감사를 표하며 “이들 덕분에 더 강해질 수 있었고, 외부의 잡음에 신경쓰지 않고 집중할 수 있었다”고 덧붙였다.
