Some seven out of 10 Japanese people regard South Korea's easternmost islets of Dokdo as their territory, with 90 percent being aware of a diplomatic row between the two countries over it, a survey showed Thursday.

According to the survey of 440 Japanese citizens and students on the Dokdo issue, 91 percent said they have heard of Japan's diplomatic tension with South Korea over Dokdo, the rocky outcroppings in the body of water between the Korean Peninsula and Japan.

Of the respondents, 67 percent said they think the rocky outcroppings are their country's territory, and 2 percent said the opposite, with 27 percent answering they do not have knowledge about it.

The survey was conducted last year by Kim Mi-kyung, professor at Hiroshima City University in Japan.

Asked about chances of armed conflicts between Seoul and Tokyo over the islets, 43 percent said it was unlikely, followed by 30 percent saying they have no idea and 22 percent answering it was possible, according to the survey.

"More than 70 percent of the respondents said they are aware of where Dokdo is located. The clash of Japanese and Chinese vessels near Senkaku Islands, in particular, appeared to boost interest among the Japanese in territorial disputes with neighboring countries," Kim said.

Dokdo, which lies closer to South Korea in the East Sea, has long been a thorn in relations between the two countries. South Korea keeps a small police detachment on the islets, effectively controlling them.

Relations between South Korea and Japan have been frayed since President Lee Myung-bak made a visit to Dokdo in August, the first by a South Korean president, and Japan strongly protested the move and renewed its claim to the East Sea islets.

As for the Tokyo-Beijing dispute over a separate set of islets in the East China Sea, known as Senkaku in Japan and Diaoyu in China, 96 percent of the respondents said they have heard of the conflict, and 69 percent said the islands are part of their territory. The opinion on possible armed conflicts between the two over the islets was split with 30 percent each, according to the survey. (Yonhap News)

일본인 67% "독도는 일본땅"

일본인 10명 가운데 7명은 독도를 일본땅으로 인식하고 있는 것으로 조사됐다.

아시아-태평양 대학의 일본인 학생 등 440명을 상대로 조사를 벌인 결과, 91%(399명 )가 "독도 분쟁에 대해 들은 적이 있다"고 응답했다.

응답자의 절대 다수는 TV와 신문을 통해 관련 정보를 접한 것으로 나타났다.

"다케시마(독도의 일본식 명칭)는 일본땅"이라고 생각한다는 응답자는 67%(293 명)에 달했다. "아니다"라는 응답은 2%(7명)에 불과했으며, 27%(118명)는 "모른다"고 답했다.

또 "독도의 위치를 알고 있다"는 응답은 76%(336명)로 조사됐다.

"독도 문제를 해결하기 위해 한일간에 무력 분쟁이 일어날 가능성이 있느냐"는 질문에는 "없다"는 응답이 43%(187명)로 가장 많았지만, "모른다"거나 "있다"는 답변도 각각 30%(134명), 22%(96명)를 차지했다.

중•일간의 센카쿠(중국명 댜오위다오) 열도 영유권 분쟁에 대해서는 96%(423명 )가 "들은 적이 있다"고 답변했고, 69%(305명)는 센카쿠를 일본 영토로 생각하는 것으로 나타났다.

센카쿠 열도의 위치를 알고 있다는 이들은 81%(355명)로 조사됐다. 센카쿠 분쟁으로 인해 중국이 일본을 공격할 가능성을 묻는 질문에는 "있다"(33%)와 "없다" (30 %)로 양분됐다.

김 부교수는 "2010년 9월 센카쿠 열도 부근의 중•일 선박 충돌 사건을 계기로 일본 국민의 영토분쟁에 대한 관심이 커졌고, 인지도도 높아졌다"며 "일본 국민이 한국 국민보다 영유권 갈등에 관심이 없다는 기존의 주장은 설득력이 없는 것으로 보인다"고 설명했다.
