Last night, Chris Hoy, a major cycling star in the U.K., became a national hero after leading the U.K. to victory in the men’s team sprint to earn his fifth gold medal in the Olympic Games. However, his moment of glory was overshadowed when his teammate claimed that he had deliberately crashed to help the team progress.

Philip Hindes, a 19-year-old German-born cyclist for the U.K., fell from his bike in the qualifier. He said that his fall was on purpose to bring victory to U.K.

After the fall, the U.K. was given a restart, which led the country to the final.

“We were saying if we have a bad start, we need to crash to get a restart,” said Hindes. “I just crashed; I did it on purpose to get a restart, just to have the fastest ride.”

British Cycling, the governing body for U.K. cycle racing, denied Hindes’ claim and said that the comment from Hindes was a mistake in translation because he has only been learning English for two years.

Later, Hindes amended his comment, saying that he fell down because he lost control.

The three cyclists for the U.K. will apparently keep their gold medals as the International Cycle Union confirmed that there was no problem or doubt in the race.

팀 동료인 필립 힌데스는 예선에서 시작 후 얼마 지나지 않아 넘어져 경기 룰에 따라 레이스를 처음부터 다시 펼쳤다.

경기 후 힌데스는 BBC와 가진 인터뷰에서 “스타트 기록이 나쁘면 일부러 넘어져서 다시 시작하기로 했다,” 라며 당시 레이스는 모두 계획된 것이라고 말했다.

이에 대해 영국 사이클 협회는 이러한 의혹을 부인하며 힌데스는 독일에서 태어나 2년 전에 영국으로 와 영어가 서투르다면서 통역에서 실수가 있었다고 말했다.

이 후, 힌데스도 당시에 일어난 사고는 자신의 실수로 넘어졌다고 말하며 입장을 바꿨다.

국제 사이클 연맹도 사고 당시 비디오 판독을 했을 때도 어떠한 의혹도 발견하지 못했다고 전했다. 결국 영국 사이클 팀은 메달을 유지 할 것으로 보인다.
