The region in the brain that makes romantic decisions has been explored by many scientists around the world, and one of the latest findings is that the decisions depend on whether a person looks similar to oneself, not only if whether she or he has physically attractive features, research showed.

When people saw a person who is physically attractive, the ventromedial prefrontal cortex which sits closer to the front of the head was activated. When people saw a face that tripped their trigger but didn’t get great ratings from others, a different region activated: the rostromedial prefrontal cortex, a segment of the medial prefrontal cortex located lower in the brain.

“That region in this moment may be doing something like evaluating not just ‘Is this person a good catch?’ but ‘Is this person a good catch for me?’” said Jeffery Cooper, a psychology researcher.

He added that the region is known to be very important in social decisions. Among the judgments this region makes is how similar someone else is to you. Given that people tend to find similar folks attractive as potential mates, the rostromedial prefrontal cortex could be saying, “Hey, this one matches us!”

Published in the Nov. 7 issue of the Journal of Neuroscience, the study concluded two ways of romantic decisions. One is that in the first few milliseconds of seeing a new face, we’re evaluating physical attractiveness. But the rostromedial prefrontal cortex goes a bit deeper, very quickly asking, “Yeah, but are they compatible with me?”

“이 부분은 아마 ‘이 사람이 좋은 사람인가?’를 판단하는 것을 넘어 ‘이 사람이 나한테 좋은 사람인가?’를 생각하고 있는 것으로 보입니다.”라고 심리학 연구자 제프리 쿠퍼(Jeffery Cooper)가 말했다.

그는 해당 부분이 사회적 결정을 내릴 때 중요한 역할을 하는 것으로 잘 알려져 있다고 말했다. 여러 가지 판단들 중 이 부분은 상대가 얼마나 자신과 비슷한지를 판단한다고 밝혔다.

11월 7일자 뉴로사이언스저널(Journal of Neuroscience)에 실린 본 연구는 두 가지 결론을 내린다. 하나는 사람들이 상대를 본 지 수 천 분의 1초만에 상대의 매력에 대해 판단한다는 것이고, 두 번째는 이에 그치지 않고 사람들은 좀 더 심층적인 판단을 한다는 점이다. 바로 “그래, 그럼 저들은 과연 나랑 어울릴까?”를 고민하는 것이다. (코리아헤럴드)
