A rural Chinese couple desperate to provide quality education for their son moved to Guangzhou, and has taken residence in a public bathroom due to expensive living costs.

According to news reports, Liao Xiaoming and his wife Wang Xuanna decided to abandon their country life in 2004 so their only child could go to a better school. The pair became public toilet cleaners, which provided them free tuition for their son.

The life in the big city, however, had proven to be too much for their meager income of 3,000 yuan (522,000 won) a month, forcing the family to live in a tiny space in a public bathroom in Beijing Road.

The family’s living quarters are inside a small attic just above a toilet stall, where all their belongings are crammed in. They have one small room which serves as both a study for their 13-year-old son and a bedroom for the family.

“If not for my son’s education, we wouldn’t take this job. It’s not paying well. We can earn much more if we go back to our village, growing vegetables and raising pigs. Besides, we have a much bigger house back home,” Liao Xiaoming said during an interview with Sina News.

Despite poor living conditions, Wang Xuanna said she is happy because her husband cares about her son.

“Happiness isn’t about money. Happiness is about a loving family,” she said.

이들이 8년째 화장실에서 먹고자는 이유

자식의 교육을 위해 8년째 화장실에서 살고 있는 중국가족의 이야기가 해외언론에 소개되어 화제가 되고 있다.

랴오 샤오밍와 왕 슈아나 부부는 지난 2004년, 아들이 보다 좋은 교육을 받게 하기 위해 시골생활을 정리하고 대도시 광저우로 이사해 공중화장실 청소부로 일하기 시작했다.

이들은 청소부 일로 인해 정부의 지원을 얻게 되어 아들의 수업료 걱정은 덜었지만 문제는 대도시에서 사는 생활비가 월 소득 3천 위안 (한화 약 52만원)에 비해 턱없이 높다는 것이었다. 결국 이들은 생활고로 인해 공중화장실 칸에서 살수밖에 없었다.

이들이 사는 집은 화장실 칸 위에 있는 조그만 다락방으로, 퀸사이즈 침대크기의 이 방에는 가족이 소유하고 있는 모든 가구들이 빈틈없이 들어차 있다. 단 하나인 방은 올해로 13세가 된 아들의 공부방이자 유일한 침실이기도 하다.

랴오 샤오밍은 현지 언론과의 인터뷰에서 아들의 교육만 아니었다면 이와 같은 직업이나 생활을 택하지는 않았을 것이라며 고향에서는 훨씬 큰 집이 있었다고 말했다.

그러나 열악한 환경에도 불구하고 이들은 자신들이 행복하다고 말했다. 왕 슈아나는 “행복은 돈으로 결정되는 게 아니다. 중요한 것은 사랑하는 가족”이라고 말했다.
