You could not have asked for a more dramatic ending to a wedding.

A wedding ceremony held recently in Berkshire, England, finished off with the bridegroom being dragged off by police, as the whole marriage turned out to be a sham, local media reported Monday.

The U.K. Border Agency raided the ceremony on a tipoff that the 40-year-old Pakistani groom was staying in the country illegally, and his marriage to a 33-year-old Polish woman may be fraudulent. It has been reported the supposed couple needed translators to communicate with each other.

The man was taken into custody and is now facing deportation. Authorities said the arrest was carried out with cooperation of the superintendent registrar in charge of the marriage.

The operation was part of a region-wide crackdown on fake marriages as a means of getting long-term residency as well as the right to be employed and claim benefits in the U.K.

“We are working closely with registrars across the Thames Valley to clamp down on sham weddings and civil partnerships,” said U.K. Border Agency assistant director Paul Smith said during an interview with a local paper.

당국은 이번 체포가 결혼 단속의 일부이며, 템즈 강 인근 지역 호적 담당자들의 협조를 얻어 진행되고 있다고 밝혔다. 국경청에 따르면, 일반적으로 이러한 가짜 결혼은 영주권을 노리는 비유럽권 국가 출신 사람이 유럽권 사람과 결혼하는 형태로 이뤄진다고 한다.
