Many of the lipsticks in the market today contain lead, according to recent research, and some scholars said they may pose a threat to the health of the general public.

Underwriters Laboratories, a global safety and quality certification company, did random testing on 22 different lipsticks and lip glosses and found that 12 of them contained lead, with the highest levels at 3.22 parts per million. The study was commissioned by U.S. broadcaster ABC’s “Good Morning America.”

While this is below the limit for lipsticks in places like California and Europe, which are five and 10 parts per million respectively, experts warned that even a small amount of lead can be harmful to people’s health.

“What we know now is that even the lowest levels of lead can harm your IQ, your behavior, your ability to learn, so we want to make sure that it is out of everything that is in the environment of children,” Dr. Sean Palfrey, medical director for the Boston Lead Poisoning Prevention Program said in an interview with GMA.

GMA did not reveal which lipstick brands had been tested.

A study conducted earlier this year by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration found 400 shades of popular lipstick contained trace amounts of lead. L’Oreal, Maybelline, Cover Girl, NARS and Stargazer were among the top 10 most contaminated of the cosmetics.

"립스틱 때문에 IQ가 떨어진다"

시중에서 유통되는 립스틱 중 상당수에 납 성분이 들어가있다는 실험결과가 나와 일반대중의 지능지수(IQ)를 떨어뜨리는 등 건강에 악영향을 끼칠 수도 있다고 미국 ABC방송이 최근 보도했다.

ABC 방송의 ‘굿모닝아메리카’ 프로그램은 북미 최고 권위 인증 기관인 UL(Underwriters Laboratories)에 의뢰해 립스틱에 얼마나 납 성분이 들어있는지 알아보는 실험을 했다.

UL의 연구진은 백화점이나 일반상점에서 무작위로 구매한 립스틱 22개의 성분을 조사했는데, 그 중 절반이 넘는 12개에서 납 성분이 검출되었다. 이 중 가장 높은 납 성분을 가진 립스틱은 3.22 ppm (백만분율•100만분의 1의 농도)을 기록했다.

이 수치는 2010년 조사에서 검출된 최고수치 7 ppm이나 캘리포니아 규정상 최고 허용수치인 5ppm, 유럽의 최고허용수치인 10ppm에는 못 미치지만 전문가들은 적은 양의 납 성분이라도 건강에 해로울 수 있다고 경고했다.

보스턴 메디컬 센터의 소아과학장이자 보스턴 납중독 방지 프로그램의 메디컬 디렉터 숀 팔프레이는 굿모닝 아메리카와의 인터뷰에서 “아주 미량의 납이라도 IQ, 행동방식, 학습능력, 등에 손상을 끼칠 수 있다”며 어린이들이 자라나는 환경에서는 이런 것들을 전부 치워야 한다고 경고했다.

이번 실험에 쓰인 립스틱의 종류는 공개되지 않았다.

한번 미국 식품의약국이 올해 초 발표한 연구결과에 따르면 유명 립스틱 브랜드 중 400여종에서 납 성분이 검출되었다고 하며, 이 중에는 로레알, 메이벨린, 커버걸 등이 포함되었다고 한다.
