1 dead after South Africa university stampede

JOHANNESBURG (AP) -- Officials at a South African university say one person is dead after prospective students stampeded the campus.

Thousands of young adults and their parents began gathering at the University of Johannesburg campus on Monday to seek admission to the college.

Many had only learned they were eligible for further study after getting results from high school final exams last week.

University of Johannesburg vice chancellor Ihron Rensburg says a mother who had accompanied her son to the campus was killed in the melee. Two others were seriously injured.

남아프리카공화국 요하네스버그에서 10일 수험생들이 학부모와 함께 대학입학 원서를 제출하는 과정에서 압사사고가 발생해 1명이 숨지고 여러명이 부상했다.

이날 오전(현지시간) 요하네스버그의 오클랜드파크에 위치한 요하네스버그대학(UJ) 캠퍼스에서 줄지어 서 있던 입시생들과 학부모들이 접수처 문이 열리자 한꺼번에 몰리는 바람에 1명이 숨졌다고 뉴스통신 사파, 국영TV SABC 등 현지 언론이 보도했다.

전날인 9일에는 약 1만명의 수험생과 학부모들이 UJ에 원서를 내기 위해 몰려들었다.

대학 측은 사고가 나자 원서 접수업무를 중단했으며, 경찰이 출동해 사고 경위를 조사 중이다.
