With its glossy pages of pouting models and racy romance tips, Myanmar's first sex education magazine has got the usually demure nation hot under the collar as it cashes in on new-found cultural freedom.

"Hyno" has sparked fevered debate since hitting Myanmar's bookstores in November, where it has become a must-read among the young and curious, just a few months after the end of direct censorship in the former junta-ruled nation.

Perhaps tame by western standards, Hyno's photo spreads of semi-clad women and columns espousing "bedroom secrets" and "the benefits of cuddling" -- to the more cryptic "modern lies before marriage" -- have raised eyebrows in conservative Myanmar, earning it an adult-rating.

But its editor brushes off accusations that the monthly publication is too risque for the country, or in any way as salacious as "Playboy" magazine as critics have claimed on Facebook.

"This magazine is a combination of sex education and entertainment," Ko Oo Swe told AFP, saying the red label on the front page warning it is for over 18s has stirred the unfavorable comparisons.

"Issues about sex remain hidden in Myanmar. Our society is becoming more open but I think sex education is still weak," he added.

Hyno -- which translates as "enchant" or "hypnotize" -- is the first magazine of its kind and is proving very popular despite the relatively-expensive $3 cover price at bookstores and street stalls.

Its debut follows the abolition in August of Myanmar's stringent pre-publication censorship which had seen officials scrupulously flag photos or articles deemed distasteful to public morality, as well as stifling dissent.

But since censorship was scrapped, fashion and lifestyle magazines have started to push the boundaries with their content -- so far without sanction.

Hyno has raised the stakes, so much so that some bookshops refuse to stock the magazine, saying its aim is to titillate rather than educate. (AFP)

Ominously, the Ministry of Information sent a letter to the interim press council registering its unhappiness with the "unethical" lifestyle magazine.

The ministry accuses Hyno of breaching its license as a fashion publication by printing "sex-related articles and photos that are not appropriate for Myanmar's culture."

"I even saw some comments on the Internet saying how shameless the editor is to print such magazine," said Ko Oo Swe, urging people to avoid criticism until they have read it and seen how he has "stuck to the cultural rules."

Despite the uproar, Hyno's young readers believe it could play a major role in raising awareness of sexually transmitted diseases and, in the longer term, shifting rigid social mores as Myanmar edges out of decades of isolation.

"For those who are quite old-fashioned it (sex education) is a very shameful thing," said Yoon Lae Khin, a 20-year-old student, who is also a volunteer for the Myanmar Medical Association (MMA).

"My mother understands there are things we need to know, but it is difficult to talk about sex in front of my father and siblings. So we need to get this awareness from magazines."

Medical professionals have joined Hyno's corner saying it is high time the country talked about sex.

"Young people do not have enough knowledge so problems such as underage pregnancy, pregnancy before marriage and infection with HIV/AIDS and venereal disease occur," said Khine Soe Win, a project officer for a youth development program with the MMA.

"Old-fashioned people turn their noses up in disapproval" of sex education, he added, criticizing them for judging the issue by the yardstick of "a culture they don't understand." (AFP)

미얀마에서 첫 성교육 잡지가 그 내용으로 인해 논란의 대상이 되었다고 AFP통신이 보도했다.

‘히노 (Hyno)’란 이름의 이 잡지는 작년 11월에 출시된 이후 미얀마의 젊은 층 사이에서는 ‘필독서’로 통하고 있다고 한다.

히노에는 여성들의 노출사진이나 ‘침실 내의 비밀,’ ‘ 포옹하는 것의 이점,’ ‘결혼전의 거짓말들’ 등 기존 미얀마 잡지들에서는 상상할 수도 없는 성 관련 내용들을 담고 있다.

과거 억업적인 독재정권으로 악명이 높았던 미얀마는 최근 민주화 바람이 불고 있는데, 작년 8월에는 출판물에 대한 엄중한 사전검열 조치가 폐지되면서 잡지 등 출판물들이 예전보다 과감한 내용을 담는 등 변화의 조짐을 보이고 있다.

그러나 그 중에서도 히노의 수위 높은 내용들은 단연 눈에 띄어 일부 서점에서는 진열을 거부하고 있을 정도이다.

미얀마 최대의 도시인 양곤에서 서점을 경영하고 있는 마웅 마웅 륀은 히노에 대한 문의가 폭주하고 있음에도 절대 이 책을 판매하지 않겠다고 말했다.

“설령 누군가가 이 잡지를 무료로 제공한다고 해도 받지 않을 겁니다”라고 그는 덧붙였다.

이와 관련해 미얀마 정보부는 산하 신문 평의회 (press council)에 히노가 비도덕적이라고 지적했다고 한다. 당국은 히노가 미얀마 문화에 적합하지 않은 성 관련 기사와 사진을 게재하여 패션관련 출판물로서의 자격을 위반했다고 주장했다.

“저는 심지어 ‘편집장이 이런 잡지를 내놓다니 부끄러운 줄도 모른다’라고 하는 의견도 봤습니다”라고 히노의 편집장 코 우 스웨는 말했다. 그는 “이 잡지가 성교육과 재미를 합친 것”이라며 사람들이 잡지를 읽기도 전에 비난부터 하는 것을 자제해야 한다고 주장했다.

이렇듯 폭주하는 비난에도 불구하고 젊은 독자층은 히노에 대한 지지를 표명하고 있다. 이들은 히노를 읽음으로서 성병 (STD)의 위험성에 대한 인식이 높아질 수 있으며 장기적으로는 오랜 기간 국제적 고립으로 인해 생긴 미얀마의 융통성 없는 사회적 관행을 없애는데 도움이 될 수 있다고 주장했다.

“옛날 사고방식을 가진 사람들에게 성교육은 부끄러운 것일 수 있죠”라고 미얀마 의학 협회 (Myanmar Medical Association: MMA)의 자원봉사자인 윤라킨 (20)은 말했다.

“저희 어머니는 이런 (성교육) 지식들이 배워야 할 것이라고 인정하시지만, 형제남매들이나 아버지 앞에서 이런 것들에 대해 논하기는 힘들죠. 그러니 잡지에서 배워야 하는 겁니다”라고 그는 말했다.

의학 전문가들 역시 미얀마인들이 성에 대해 논할 때가 되었다고 말했다.

MMA에서 청년 개발 프로그램을 맡고 있는 카인 소 윈은 “젊은 사람들은 미성년 임신 등 문제에 대한 지식이 없다”며 예전 사고방식을 가진 사람들이 “자신들이 이해 못하는 기준”으로 히노를 비난을 하고 있다고 지적했다. (코리아헤럴드)
