Record to die for: man kills self in attempt for burial-alive record

A man who buried himself trying to break a local record for longest time spent being buried alive has died, BBC and other sources reported Sunday.

According to police, 24-year-old Sri Lankan Janaka Basnayake voluntarily walked into his three-meter-deep “grave” sealed with wood and oil with the help of family and friends on Saturday. Hours later, he was pronounced dead.

The cause of death had not been determined yet, and further medical investigations are taking place.

His family said he was buried alive on two previous occasions -- for two and a half hours and six hours respectively.

The Guinness Book of World Records does not recognize a world record on category of “time spent being buried alive” but Britain's Daily Mail reported that a British man claimed in 1998 that he had spent three months buried alive.

바스나야케가 “기록”에 도전한 것은 처음이 아니다. 그의 가족들은 그가 예전에도 두 번 – 각각 두 시간 반과 6시간 동안 생매장된 적이 있다고 전했다.

최장시간 생매장에 대한 공식적인 세계기록은 없지만 영국의 데일리 메일이 보도한 바에 따르면 한 영국인이 자신이 생매장된 뒤 3개월을 버텼다고 1998년에 주장했다고 한다.
