Day 01 [ TOEFL LISTENING Conversation]

S:Student), A:Adminlstretor

S: Excuse me, I saw a message on Professor Brown‘s door saying that anyone who needs assistance from him should come to you,..
A: Oh, yes. What can I do for you?
S: Um. Professor Brown said he would write a letter of recommendation for me. for my graduate school application... and he said he’d leave it the mailbox. But I checked this morning and it wasn‘t there, so I’m hoping he left it with you.
A: Really? Well, he did leave me a list of things to do, which I have right here. But it doesn‘t mention anything like that.
S: Are you sure?
A: Yep. You can even take a look at it if you want. It’s not on the list.
S: Then what am I supposed to do?... ‘cause the deadline for one of the applications is the day after tomorrow. So I was hoping to pick up the letter today and send it off by express mail.
A: I don’t know. I‘m sorry. I think he was under a lot of pressure just before he left. He had to wrap up his teaching responsibilities for the term and he had to submit the final draft of his textbook. Uh... I think the publisher was really pressing him to finish the book. And... it all happened just before going abroad.
S: Oh, well, maybe it might turn out for the best after all. I wasn’t really excited about the first graduate school anyway.
A: Oh, well, at... .at least it isn‘t your first choice. But still, it’s not like Professor Brown to forget something that important.
S: Yeah, I mean, it‘s so cool that he’s gonna do field work in the Australian cutback, right in the middle of the desert. Just getting ready to go away would be so overwhelming to me. He‘s amazing. But he’s usually so on top of things.

conversation 은 첫번째문제는 두가지로 분류할수 있다

[해설] conversation은 일반적으로 학생이 problem 을 가지고 교수나 직원을 찾아간다 . 위의 경우도 마찬가지로, 학생이 문제점을 가지고 직원을 찾아간다. signal 로는 < what can I do for you?> 가 전형적이다.
이 signal 뒤를 들으면 문제점이 제시된다. 이 학생의 문제점은 이하에 < letter 가 mail box 에 없다는 것이다.>
그래서 방문목적은 이하에 나타난다. 방문목적은 < pick up the letter > 이다.
그러므로 정답은 A 이다.
