A local newspaper poll showed only a quarter of voters support Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s government as his troubles mount before a by-election his party must win to avoid policy deadlock.

일본의 한 신문사가 실시한 여론조사에 따르면, 일본 유권자 1/4만이 아베 신조 내각을 지지하는 것으로 나타났다. 정치적 교착상태를 피하기 위해 꼭 승리할 필요가 있는 보궐선거를 앞둔 아베 신조 총리로서는, 고민이 더욱 깊어지는 상황이다.

Support fell as much as *7 percentage points from last month to 25 percent in a poll by the Asahi Shimbun daily, continuing a slide from an initial high of around 70 percent when the prime minister took office last September. A separate poll by the Mainichi Shimbun daily showed support *at 33 percent, *down 10 percentage points from March.

아사히신문이 실시한 이번 여론조사에서 현 내각에 대한 지지율은 25%로, 지난달 조사 보다 무려 7% 포인트나 감소한 결과를 보였다. 지난 9월 총리 취임 당시, 약 70%까지 달했던 지지율은, 그 이후 계속적인 하락세를 보여 왔다. 마이니치신문이 실시한 별도의 여론조사에서도 현 내각에 대한 지지율은 33%를 기록해, 지난 3월 이후 10% 포인트 하락한 모습을 보였다.

The ruling Liberal Democratic Party continued to take power last year after winning a general election by a landslide, but voter doubts have *since grown over the premier’s decision-making abilities on the economy and diplomacy. Around half of voters in the Asahi poll said Abe should resign if he fails to settle a feud with Washington over where to relocate a U.S. military base on Japan’s southern Okinawa islands by the end of May, as he has promised.
