From Interpretation to Communication: Dreaming of Becoming a Global Leader

Choi Jung-wha, president of Corea Image Communication Institute, has written a new book “From Interpretation to Communication: Dreaming of Becoming a Global Leader.”

The book presents life and career tips for aspiring interpreters and professionals. The professor-interpreter also teaches at the Korean-French department of the Graduate School of Interpretation and Translation at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies. 

Choi also offers interesting accounts of her encounters with local and world leaders, including Jasmine Lee, the first non-ethnic Korean and naturalized Korean to become a lawmaker in Korea; Christine Lagarde, the managing director of the International Monetary Fund; and popular local author and scholar Kim Ran-do.

Some of the practical tips for aspiring interpreters include always being punctual and well read, and keeping everything they translate confidential.

“It’s also important to have people skills and be on good terms with everyone,” Choi writes. “The interpretation field is a small circle, where everyone knows everyone. This job very often requires team work, especially when you are doing simultaneous interpretation with other translators. ”

Choi also stresses the importance of learning foreign languages for those who strive to be world leaders. “Learning foreign languages lets you experience different cultures,” she writes. “I think experiencing different cultures can make one’s life so much more interesting and exciting.”
