The 12th Conference of the Parties to United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (UNCBD) will be held in South Korea's alpine city of Pyeongchang in September next year, the environment ministry said Tuesday.

The conference will be attended by 20,000 delegates from 193 countries, it said.

Ways to implement the so-called "Nagoya Protocol" will be discussed during the conference, the ministry said.

The Nagoya Protocol on Access to Genetic Resources and the Fair and Equitable Sharing of Benefits Arising from their Utilization to the Convention on Biological Diversity is an international agreement which aims to share the benefits arising from the utilization of genetic resources in a fair and equitable way.

The protocol was adopted by the 10th UNBCD Conference of the Parties held in 2010 in Nagoya, Japan.

Pyeongchang, 182 kilometers of Seoul, is the host city of the 2018 Winter Olympics. (Yonhap News)
