Brain stroke on rise among aged population

SEOUL, Sept. 21 (Yonhap) -- The number of people suffering from cerebral infarction, a type of stroke caused by disturbance in blood vessels supplying blood to the brain, is rising among the aged population in South Korea, a report showed Wednesday.

The number of cerebral infarction patients rose by an annual average of 4.2 percent from 2006 to some 437,000 last year, according to a report from the National Health Insurance Corp.

The ailment was common in both men and women as 907 males and 883 females out of every 100,000 people suffered the illness in 2010.

The increase was largely led by patients aged over 80 years as the number of patients per 100,000 people aged between 20 and 60 years decreased from a year earlier, according to the report.

"An increase in the overall number of cerebral infarction patients is inevitable in an aging society," said Lee Joon-hong, a doctor and professor of neurology from a hospital run by the national insurance corp.

국민건강보험공단은 뇌경색증 질환의 건강보험 진료비 지급 자료를 분석한 결과진료환자 수는 2006년부터 매년 평균 4.2% 늘어나 2010년 43만7천명을 기록했다고 2 1일 밝혔다.

환자의 성별 현황을 보면 지난해 기준으로 인구 10만명당 남자 907명, 여자 883명인 것으로 집계됐다.

연령대별 추이를 살펴본 결과 80세 이상의 노인에서는 인구 10만명당 환자 수가 크게 증가한 반면 20~60대에서는 환자 발생이 감소한 것으로 조사됐다.

뇌경색증으로 인한 건강보험 진료비는 2006년 4천601억원에서 2010년 8천73억원으로 연평균 15.1% 증가했으며 공단이 부담한 급여비는 같은 기간 3천285억원에서 5 천781억원으로 늘어났다.

이준홍 국민건강보험 일산병원 신경과 교수는 "인구 고령화에 따라 뇌경색증 환자수가 전체적으로 증가하는 것은 당연한 현상"이라며 "20~60대의 환자 수가 감소 한 것은 조기에 적극적인 예방과 조절이 이뤄졌기 때문으로 추정된다"고 말했다
