South Korean athletes will be eyeing another strong Winter Olympics when the Russian city of Sochi hosts the quadrennial competition next year, a senior sports official here said on Wednesday.

Kim Jae-youl, president of the Korea Skating Union, told reporters that the goal is to grab “at least four gold medals” at the Feb. 7-23 event. Kim will serve as the head of South Korea’s athletic delegation at the Sochi Winter Games next February.

“We want to finish high in the medal table for the third consecutive Winter Games,” Kim said. “I will spare no efforts to support our hard-working athletes and help them put up the best results they can.”

South Korea has enjoyed a solid run at recent Winter Olympics. The country picked up six gold medals, all from short track speed skating, to finish seventh at the 2006 Torino Winter Games. Four years later in Vancouver, South Korea also earned six gold medals, with three from speed skating and one from figure skating, to rank fifth in the medal standings. (Yonhap News)
