RIVERSIDE, Calif. (UPI) -- The 340-ton granite boulder chosen to be part of a Los Angeles County Museum of Art installation has completed the first 5 miles of its 106-mile journey.

Mark Albrecht, project manager Emmert International, which is handling transportation of the massive rock, said the boulder left the Stone Valley quarry in Riverside Tuesday night and came to rest early Wednesday about 5 miles away at the intersection of Mission Boulevard and Bellegrave Avenue in Ontario, the Los Angeles Times reported Wednesday.

"We want to limit our travel tonight," Albrecht said prior to the 5-mile trek. "We don't want to bite off more than we can chew."

Albrecht said the 200-foot apparatus used to transport the boulder and its 20-strong fleet of support vehicles makes fast travel difficult.

The boulder is scheduled to arrive at the museum after 11 days of travel to become the centerpiece of artist Michael Heizer's "Levitated Mass" sculpture.

미국 로스앤젤레스 일대가 거대한 암석 수송 작전으로 떠들썩하다.

29일 (현지시간) 로스앤젤레스 지역 언론은 높이 6ｍ에 무게가 340t에 이르는 바위 덩이를 12일 동안 170㎞ 구간을 옮기는 작업을 소개했다.

바위덩이는 로스앤젤레스 카운티 미술관(LACMA)이 구입한 야외 조각 작품이다.

조형 예술가 마이클 하이저는 이 거대한 암석 덩어리에 '공중으로 들어올려진 덩어리(Levitated Mass)'라는 제목을 붙였고 독지가의 기부로 로스앤젤레스 카운티 미술관에 영구 전시된다.

구입은 이미 작년에 끝났지만 바위를 캐낸 채석장에서 미술관까지 옮기는 작업 은 군사 작전을 방불케 하는 복잡한 작업이었다.

바위를 옮겨오려면 4개 카운티, 22개 시를 지나야 하는데 이들 지방 정부마다 도로 사용 허가를 받는 등 행정 절차를 밟는데만 몇개월이 걸렸다.

운송팀은 바위를 특수 제작된 철제 운반대에 올린 뒤 600마력의 트랙터 2대를 동원해 운반한다.

바위를 실은 운반대가 움직이는 속도는 고작 시속 8㎞.

도로를 모조리 통제한 채 움직여야 하기에 오후 11시에서 다음날 오전 5시까지 심야에만 이동한다.

거북이 걸음으로 이동하는 바위는 오는 3월10일 오전 목적지인 로스앤젤레스 카 운티 미술관에 도착할 예정이다.

운송팀 가운데 일부는 운반 차량이 지나는 길목의 전봇대와 전선, 신호등 등 주변 시설물을 미리 철거했다가 지나간 뒤에 곧바로 다시 설치하는 작업을 맡았다.

로스앤젤레스 지역 방송사들은 지난 26일 채석장을 떠난 바위가 움직이는 모습을 뉴스 시간마다 보여주고 있다.
