A gigantic 15 kg cat in New York died despite being put on a rigorous diet.

According to news reports, a 9-year-old ginger moggie called SpongeBob weighed about 15 kg. He died of asthma two months after he was adopted by new owners Courtney and Matt Farrell in New York.

SpongeBob arrived at Animal Haven rescue center earlier this year after his elderly owner moved to a care home.

Staff members of the center said they put him on a strict diet to improve his health and chances of being adopted.

Kendra Mara, associate director of Animal Haven, said she can only guess that his owner was feeding the cat dry food on a regular basis, maybe just leaving it out, so he was able to eat whenever he wanted.

Veterinaries said that even though the cat’s obesity was not the direct cause of death, it made it too dangerous for vets to operate on him to treat his asthma.

Matt and Courtney Farrell said that they had to let their cat go, giving him love to the end.

Courtney also said that letting her cat go was the most difficult thing that she has ever experienced.

15kg 뚱보 고양이 스폰지밥 안타깝게..

거대한 몸집으로 유명해진 뉴욕의 한 고양이가 새로운 주인에게 입양된 지 두 달 만에 숨져 주위를 안타깝게 하고 있다.

언론보도에 따르면, 몸무게가 15킬로그램에 달하는 것으로 유명해진 9살짜리 주황색 고양이인 ‘스폰지밥’은 체중감량에도 불구하구 천식으로 사망했다. 뉴욕에 사는 새 주인인 코트니와 매트 커플에게 입양된 지 두 달 만의 일이다.

스폰지밥은 올해 초 나이 든 전 주인이 요양원에 들어가면서 뉴욕시에 위치한 ‘애니멀헤이븐’ 동물보호소에 맡겨짐과 동시에 그 특유의 덩치로 사람들에게 큰 인기를 끌기 시작했다.

보호소 직원들은 이 고양이가 센터에 맡겨지자 마자 그의 건강과 입양될 가능성을 높이기 위해 엄격하게 체중 감량을 시켰다고 밝혔다.

동물보호소의 직원인 켄드라 마라는 스폰지밥이 어떻게 그렇게 큰 덩치를 갖게 되었는지 확실히 알 수는 없지만, 전 주인이 요양원에 들어가면서 고양이밥을 스폰지밥에게 통째로 남기고 간 것이 원인일 것으로 추측된다고 밝혔다.

이 고양이를 진료했던 수의사들에 따르면 비록 스폰지밥의 몸무게가 직접적인 사인은 아니지만 지나치게 비대해진 장기 때문에 천식 치료를 위한 수술을 진행할 수 없었다고 밝혔다.

주인인 코트니 패럴은 스폰지밥이 죽도록 내버려둘 수 밖에 없었던 것이 지금까지 자신이 겪었던 일 중에 가장 힘든 것이었다고 말했다.
