The Organizing Committee for the IAAF World Championships in Athletics- Daegu 2011 (president Bum-il Kim) and the Korean National Housing Corporation (president Jae-deok Choi) opened the "Groundbreaking Ceremony to Kick Off the Construction of the Athletes' Village for the World Championships in Athletics- Daegu 2011"at the construction site in the Yula 2 Land Development Area. 


Three hundred people including the mayor of Daegu, Bum-il Kim; the president of the Korea National Housing Corporation, Jae-deok Choi; various national assembly members; key national dignitaries; and citizens attended the affair. 


The Athletes' Village will house up to 3,500 athletes and team officials, and the village vows not only to provide pertinent facilities necessary to regulate an athletes' condition, provide rest and recreation, and promote friendship among athletes, but also the village promises to be a Mecca of international sports' exchange. 


The apartments of the Yula 2 Land Development Area where the Athletes' Village will be built is five minutes away from Daegu Stadium, as well as being close to various transportation means like subway stations, the airport, and highways. 


Furthermore, with its stunning view overlooking the Geumho River, the village provides picturesque scenes of nature, promising to be the most beautiful and eco-friendly village in the history of the games. The Athletes?Village seeks to become the ideal resting place worthy of the praises of people from around the world.


The spatial configuration, organization, and composition have been designed scientifically, and upon completion of the games, a sports park where residents can exercise and enjoy leisure activities will be built; and the apartments will stand out as a high-tech place of dwelling furnished with the latest technology befitting a front running nation in the IT industry (water-saving toilets, energy conservation through an individual room heating system, computerized patrol system, and wireless telemetry to name a few). 


In particular, for the first time in the country a Photovoltaic (PV) power system, which coincides with the new growth engine that applies a low carbon, green growth policy, will be adapted to the apartments of the Athletes' Village (which are public housing). Total cost of the project is estimated to reach KRW 12 million, and by building a 158 kW Photovoltaic power system, which will create 19,000 kW of energy every month, electricity costs will be reduced, not to mention CO2 emission will drop because of the use of eco-friendly energy; as a result, the city aims to create low-energy housing that relies on sustainable energy.
