A Staffordshire bull terrier named Scrappy ate the remains of his dead mother Ronnie to save himself from starvation after their owner left them without food for two weeks in Lincolnshire, England, according to news sources.

The two dogs were left alone when their owner Katrina Plumridge, 31, moved out of the house on March 28. The dogs were found on April 19 by a real estate agent who entered the house. He found Scrappy whose ribs, spine and hip bones were all prominent before coming upon Ronnie’s dead body. He said there was a “nauseating and overpowering” stench in the room and he was horrified.

He immediately called the RSPCA, a leading U.K. animal welfare charity. Doctors found that Ronnie had died of starvation and believed that Scrappy ate parts of his mother’s body to stay alive. They estimated the time of starvation to be around two weeks.

Plumridge claimed in court that a friend was supposed to have been looking for the dogs’ new home after she moved out. However, the RSPCA viewed this statement with suspicion as she was not able to give a full name or phone number for her friend.

She was handed an 18-week suspended prison sentence, 180 hours of community service and an £500 fine.

개들을 유기한 혐의로 기소된 플럼리지는 법정에서 자신이 이사한 후 친구가 개들의 새 집을 찾아주기로 했다고 설명했으나, 이 친구의 이름이나 전화번호를 대지 못했다.

결국 그는 집행유예 18개월과, 180시간 사회봉사, 그리고 500파운드 (한화 약 90만원)의 벌금을 선고받았다.
