A South Carolina woman who left her newborn son in the toilet where she gave birth to him while she was at the circus has pleaded guilty to injuring him.

Jessica Ann Blackham, 26, of Easley was given a five-year suspended sentence Wednesday, the Greenville News reported. She must spend a year in home confinement and three years on probation.

Blackham, who was 24 at the time, said she did not realize she was pregnant when she delivered the baby at the Bi-Lo Center in Greenville.

“I love my son dearly and it kills me to know that in the first few crucial moments of his life I was unable to provide him with the care he needed,” she said. “And I thank God that somebody was there to save him, to save his precious life.”

Her attorney, Tom Quinn, said two psychiatrists had offered differing opinions on whether she was aware of her pregnancy.

The boy was rescued by a center employee and is now living with adoptive parents. (UPI)

아기 화장실에 버린 20대女, “사랑했지만..”


미국 사우스캐롤라이나의 한 여성이 화장실에서 아이를 낳은 후 그 자리에 버리고 간 혐의로 유죄를 선고받았다.

제시카 앤 블랙엄(26)은 이 혐의로 5년 집행유예를 선고 받았다고 현지 언론 그린빌뉴스가 보도했다. 블랙엄은 또한 1년간의 가택연금과 3년간의 보호감찰도 받게 됐다.

사건 당시 24세였던 블랙엄은 자신이 임신했다는 사실을 전혀 몰라 당황했었다고 밝혔다.

그녀는 당시 “나는 내 아이를 사랑했지만 아이에게 필요한 보살핌을 줄 수 없다는 사실이 너무도 힘들었다. 그 때 누군가가 아이를 챙겨줬다는 사실에 감사한다”고 진술했다.

블랙엄의 변호인 톰 퀸은 두 명의 정신과 의사가 그녀를 진단한 결과 그녀가 당시 자신의 임신 사실을 알았었는가의 여부에 관해 서로 다른 의견을 내놨다고 밝혔다.

블랙엄이 아이를 방치하고 현장을 떠난 직후 근처에 있던 관리인이 아이를 발견했고 현재는 입양가정에서 생활하고 있는 것으로 알려졌다. (코리아헤럴드)
