페이스북 장기매매 성행, 충격!

페이스북에서 장기매매가 성행하고 있어 충격을 주고 있다.

대부분의 장기매매는 돈이 필요한 사람들과 병으로 인해 장기가 필요한 사람들의 이해관계가 맞아떨어져 이루어지고 있으며 페이스북이 주요한 플랫폼이 되고 있다고 외신들이 전했다.

선데이포스트의 한 기자가 페이스북에 장기기증자를 찾는 광고를 올리자 일주일도 안되어 인도, 멕시코 등 다양한 국적을 가진 11명의 사람들에게 연락을 받았으며 한 남성은 장기를 제공하는 대신 한화로 오천만원이 넘는 돈을 요구했다고 이 신문은 전했다.

2012년 세계보건기구(WHO) 보고서에 따르면 한 개 이상의 장기가 매 시간 불법적으로 거래되고 있고 대부분은 '신장'이다.

장기 기부자는 현금이 급하게 필요한 가난한 농부들이 대부분이며 브로커들과 계약을 맺은 장의사들이 장기를 빼돌리는 경우도 있다. 최악의 경우 인신매매나 납치된 희생자들의 장기가 거래되고 있는 것으로 알려지고 있어 충격을 더하고 있다.

한국, 미국을 포함한 대부분의 국가들에서 장기를 사고 파는 것은 법으로 엄격히 금지되어 있다.

하지만 장기 기증에 대한 높은 수요가 공급으로 채워지지 않고 있어 불법적 장기매매가 성행하고 있는 것으로 보인다. 많은 경우 장기를 기증 받기 위해서 7년 이상을 대기해야 하지만 장기 이식이 급하게 필요한 환자들의 경우 어쩔 수 없이 불법적인 방법으로 장기 구입을 시도할 수 밖에 없다고 이 신문은 전했다.

페이스북은 2012년 페이스북 사용자들이 합법적인 방법으로 장기 기증을 하도록 장려하기 위해 장기 기증 캠페인을 시작했다. 그러나 불법적인 장기 거래가 페이스북을 통해 이루어지고 있다고 알려진 만큼 도덕적, 법적 책임을 피하기는 어려울 것으로 보인다.

A slew of people reportedly turned to Facebook in an attempt to sell their organs, mostly desperate for money.

The Huffington Post reported Monday that organs are illegally traded on Facebook, which poses moral, ethical and legal dilemmas for those who are desperately in need of organ donations or money.

A journalist from the Sunday Post recently placed an ad on Facebook in search of a donor and he received 11 responses in less than a week, with one man offering an organ in return for 30,000 pounds ($50,000), the U.S. media outlet said.

A 2012 report from the World Health Organization says more than one human organ is illegally purchased every hour worldwide -- the majority of these are kidneys.

Donors can include impoverished villagers desperately in need of cash, funeral home directors who cut deals with organ brokers and, in the worst cases, victims of sex-trafficking or kidnapping, the Huffington Post reported.

Buying or selling organs in Korea is strictly outlawed, as well as in almost every country worldwide, including the United States.

Yet, years-long hospital waiting lists and the time-critical health needs that most patients face force some into the black market on Facebook, the paper pointed out.

Facebook launched its own legal organ donation initiative in 2012 as part of efforts to create a tool that prompted its users to register for organ donation, but it appears to be difficult for Facebook to dodge the moral, ethical and legal responsibility for the alleged organ deals on the social networking site.
