필자는 EBS 오디오 어학당에서 토익 강의를 새로 맡아 준비중이다. 그 강의 원고 일부는 일본에 수출할 토익 Vocabulary책 원고가 된다. 원고의 취지는 급한불부터 끄자는 맥락에서 1. 정답으로 잘 나오는 것들을 1차적으로 정리하고 그 다음에 2. 기본 핵심단어를 정리한 후 3. 고급단어까지 정리하는 구성을 가지고 있다.. 그 원고 일부를 최초로 독자여러분께 제공한다. 토익을 공부하는 분들 뿐 아니라 일상영어에 관심이 있는 모든 분들에게 도움이 되는 단어 표현 원고가 될 것이다. 많은 내용을 전단하기 위해서 쉬운 문장들의 번역은 생략했다. 본 내용에는 450여회 토익 응시를 토대로한 통계적인 분석이 들어가 있다. 시험을 보신 분들과 토익 선생님들은 그 가치를 인정하는 정보들이다.

사람들이 모여 있으면 gather가 들어간 문장이 정답이 잘 된다.

- Some people  are gathered beneath the tent.

- Some people are gathered at a table for a meal

- Colleagues have gathered in a room.

2. wearing이 들리면 정답률이 80%이다.

- She is wearing gloves. cf. putting on은 동작묘사 - 오답으로 잘 나온다!

- She’s wearing a backpack.

3. holding, grasping, grabbing이 들리면 정답률 80%이다.

- Some people are holding a tray of food.

- The woman is holding a hammer. *

- A vase is holding some flowers.

- She’s grasping a rod.

- The men are holding a container.

hold:일반적으로 많이 쓰이는 붙잡다

grasp: 꽉 안전하게 움켜잡다

"She grasped the handlebars of her bike and pedaled away" (그녀는 자전거 핸들을 꽉 잡고 페달을 밟았다)

"He grasped the rope tightly to avoid falling."(그는 떨어지지 않도록 밧줄을 단단히 움켜쥐었다.)

grab: 획하고 갑자기 거칠게 잡다

"She grabbed the last cookie from the plate."(그녀는 접시에서 마지막 쿠키를 빨리 집었다)

"He grabbed his coat and rushed out the door."(그는 코트를 확 움켜쥐고 문밖으로 뛰쳐나갔다.)

grip: 꽉잡다

"The weightlifter had a strong grip on the barbell"(역도 선수는 바벨을 꽉 잡았다.)

snatch: 빠르게 갑자기 낚아채다

"She snatched the purse from the thief's hand."(그녀는 도둑의 손에서 지갑을 빼앗았다)

4. 무엇을 관찰하는 사진에서 examining, inspect, looking into, glance at, 은 70% 정답이 된다.

- He's examining some plants.

- One of the men is examining a document.

- They are examining some merchandise[상품].

- A woman is looking at a document..

- A tire is being examined.

They’re glancing out the window at a statue[동상].

* gaze at ~을 응시하다

They’re gazing at a large painting.

5. 서다 보다는 앉다(seated, sitting)가 60% 정답이 된다.

seated 〉 sitting 〉 standing의 순서로 답이 잘 된다

People are seated in individual cubicles.

There are some windows by a seating area. *

A seating area is unoccupied[비어있는].

Some people are seated on their motorcycles.

6. display(전시, 전시하다), on display(전시중), are displayed가 들리면 90% 정답이다.

- Merchandise is displayed in wooden boxes

- Some flowers are being displayed as a centerpiece.

- Some merchandise is being displayed for sale.

- A selection of food items is on display.

- Some musical instruments have been displayed.

7. resting(놓다, 쉬다)이 들리면 70% 정답이다.

- The man is resting his arm on a counter.

8. extend(펼쳐져 있다)가 들리면 60% 정답이다.

- A path extends along the water.

- A structure extends over railroad tracks.

9. alone(홀로)이들리면 90%이상 정답이다.

- A woman is alone in the dining area

10. mount(고정시키다, 탑재하다)가 들리면 70% 정답이다.

- A telephone has been mounted on a countertop. 전화기가 조리대 위에 고정되어 있다
