[Yang Sung-jin] Perception of gaming in Korea
In an episode illustrating the efficient use of symbols, Victor Hugo once sent a telegram to his publisher that simply read “?” What he received was an equally simple “!” Hugo wanted to know how his book was doing, and the exclamation point revealed it was doing quite well. When the same symbols are used in multiplayer online games, they serve different purposes. In “World of Warcraft,” a massively multiplayer online role-playing game by U.S.-based Blizzard Entertainment, players often come acro

[Yang Sung-jin] Fan’s view of Apple Watch
Apple unveiled three major products on Tuesday: bigger iPhones, a mobile payment solution and, as widely expected, a smart watch named Apple Watch. When I watched the streaming video of the big event on Apple’s website in the wee hours in Seoul ― by the way, the quality of the streaming was horrific, very un-Apple-ish ― and witnessed the shiny, sleek and stylish gadgets, I felt my Mac instinct get pleasantly stirred up and almost saw my pocket opening in a few months. Here’s a disclaimer: I’m on

[Yang Sung-jin] Heartless facts, truthful lies
Well, it’s been a quiet week in Lake Soul, my hometown, out on the edge of the peninsula. This is, I’m fairly confident, not a lie or a cheap rip-off of the opening line of “A Prairie Home Companion,” a radio show that I’ve enjoyed listening to over the years. It’s been a quiet week in every aspect. The body of Yoo Byung-eun was finally found, the very source of all evil, whom some politicians believe was responsible for the sinking of the Sewol ferry in April. Other key figures also turned themse

[Yang Sung-jin] What I remember about the cats
When the summer comes, my thoughts of two cats always bring some mixed feelings. Both the cats, named Charlie and Shadow, were chubby and yet their personalities were quite different. Charlie was gloomy, shy and introspective; Shadow, despite the not-so-bright name, was cheerful, playful and full of the energy found in typical extroverts.I miss those cats, with some warmth welling up in my heart. But it’s also disheartening to recall their images since I know they passed away several years ago.

Korea reaffirms stance on Japan's 'collective self-defense'
South Korea said Thursday that Japan should dispel doubts and concerns shared by its neighboring countries as it moves closer to exercising the right to "collective self-defense." Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe called for a review of the interpretation of the pacifist constitution that has banned Japan from exercising the right to collective self-defense. The right would allow Tokyo to fight alongside its allies and beyond its borders. Seoul's foreign ministry said that Japan's move shou

Further punishment possible over N. Korea's missile launches: S. Korean envoy
The United Nations would discuss additional measures to punish North Korea for its recent ballistic missile launches, a South Korean envoy to the international body said Thursday. Last week, the communist country fired off two medium-range Rodonng ballistic missiles into the sea off its east coast, the first such launches in four years, in what appeared to be a show of force in defiance of ongoing Seoul-Washington military exercises. The move, which followed a series of short-range rocket l

Chinese media tells N. Korea to 'abandon illusions' about nuclear weapons
BEIJING (Yonhap) -- China's state-run newspaper called on North Korea Thursday to "abandon illusions" about its defiant pursuit of nuclear weapons, warning that a fresh nuclear test would only deepen isolation. The Global Times published the editorial days after North Korea threatened to carry out a "new form" of nuclear test, more than a year after its third nuclear test heightened tension and strained ties with its key ally China. In unusually harsh language, the newspaper said North

EU leaders weighing sanctions against Russia
BRUSSELS (AP) -- Russia will face sanctions over its military incursion in Ukraine's Crimean peninsula unless it withdraws its troops or engages in credible talks to defuse the situation, European leaders said Thursday. ``We need to send a very clear message to the Russian government that what has happened is unacceptable and should have consequences,'' British Prime Minister David Cameron said as he arrived at an emergency meeting of the bloc's 28 leaders in Brussels. But leaders app
