North Korean leader Kim Jong-un visited a truck factory and called for the need to establish a modern automotive industry in his country, Pyongyang's state media reported Saturday.
Kim inspected the March 16 Factory that builds large-scale trucks, according to the Korean Central News Agency.
During his visit, Kim said that the factory, which was founded on March 16, 1977, shows "the wise guidance and meticulous care" of past leaders -- Kim Il-sung and Kim Jong-il. He was also satisfied with what the workers of the factory have done, saying that they have contributed to "the prosperity of the country" by supplying lots of trucks.
Kim also said that he believes North Korea can have a modern automotive industry with the factory acting as a "mother base." He added that North Korea's motor vehicle production has "solid material and technical foundations," with the January 18 General Machine Factory producing high-performance engines.
The leader of the communist state then called for upgrading the March 16 factory so that it can "fully meet the increasing demand of the national economy for transport and build up the country's defense capability," according to the KCNA.
"A fresh turning point should be made in raising the country's automotive industry to the world level," Kim was quoted as saying by the KCNA, adding that the modernization of the factory will build a rich and powerful nation.
Kim said the workers of the March 16 factory would "fully discharge their honorable duty" before having a photo session with them, the KCNA said.
Kim was accompanied by party, military and state officials, including O Su-yong and Pak Thae-song, vice-chairmen of the Workers' Party of Korea Central Committee, according to the KCNA.
