Korean volleyball coach Park Man-bok will be inducted into the sport's Hall of Fame, officials in Seoul said Thursday.
The Korea Volleyball Association said Park, former head coach of the Peruvian women's national volleyball team, is among five members of the 2016 International Volleyball Hall of Fame class. The KVA added Park will be the first Korean to join the honorable ranks.
The other four inductees are indoor volleyball player Nikola Grbic of Serbia, female indoor volleyball player Danielle Scott of the United States, and beach players Misty May-Treanor of the United States and Emanuel Rego of Brazil.
Park first coached Peru in 1974 and won silver at the 1988 Seoul Olympics. Peru finished sixth at the 1980 Moscow Games, fourth at the 1984 Los Angeles Games and 11th at the 2000 Sydney Olympics.
Park also led Peru to a silver at the 1982 FIVB Volleyball World Championship and a bronze at the 1986 edition. In the Pan-American Volleyball Cup, the 79-year-old coach guided Peru to two silver (1979, 1987) and bronze (1983, 1991) medals. He also won seven titles with Peru at the South American Volleyball Championship.
Park and the other four Hall of Fame inductees will be officially introduced in a ceremony at the Volleyball Hall of Fame in Holyoke, Massachusetts, the U.S. city known for the birthplace of volleyball, on Oct. 22.
The induction class is elected by a vote of past Hall of Fame inductees. A total of 125 men and women from 21 countries around the world have been inducted into the Hall of Fame since 1985. (Yonhap)
