Hyundai Motor Co., South Korea's largest carmaker, and its sister Kia Motors Corp. saw cumulative sales of its five flagship sports utility vehicles surpass the combined 15 million mark worldwide last month, industry data showed Sunday.
The five models -- Hyundai's Tucson and Santa Fe and Kia's Sportage, Sorento and Mohave -- reported a total of 15.13 million in accumulated sales at home and abroad since their launches, according to the data.
Sales of Hyundai's Tucson compact reached 4.42 million as of end-February, with its global sales piercing the 4 million plateau last year 11 years after the first generation cars hit the road.
The Santa Fe also touched the 4 million mark in sales at the end of last year, becoming the second South Korean SUV to achieve the milestone, following the Tucson.
Kia's Sportage compact is expected to hit 4 million in sales at the end of March, while sales of its larger sibling Sorento reached a cumulative 2.51 million.
Some 10,000 units of the large-sized Mohave, marketed in North America as the Kia Borrego, were sold last year in South Korea, with its 2016 sales target reaching 15,000 units. The car is no longer sold in markets like the U.S.
In 2015, combined sales of the five SUVs stood at 1.75 million units, accounting for 21.8 percent of 8 million in sales reported by Hyundai Motor Group. (Yonhap)
