게이 펭귄 커플, 아기 펭귄 입양해 화제

영국 동물원에 있는 게이 펭귄 커플이 버려진 아기 펭귄을 입양해 키워 화제가 되고 있다.

영국 일간지 데일리 메일의 보도에 따르면 윙햄 야생 동물공원 소속의 두 훔볼트 펭귄 커밋과 점스는 지난 2012년부터 함께 했다. 반면 두 수컷 펭귄이 커플이 됨으로써 남은 암컷 펭귄 두마리는 현재 혼자 남겨져 있는 상태다.

펭귄 부부는 작년에도 버려진 알을 입양했으나 끝내 부화하지 않아 실패로 그쳤다. 그러나 올해 입양한 알은 지난 4월 12일 성공적으로 부화했다.

새끼 펭귄의 원래 부모 또한 윙햄 동물원에 살고 있다. 그러나 동물원 측은 암컷은 먹을 것을 찾느라 알을 버렸으며 수컷 또한 알을 품지 않으려고 했다고 전했다.

“게이 펭귄 부부는 아직 한 달도 채 안된 아기 펭귄을 잘 돌보고 있다. 심지어 우리 동물원 중 최고의 펭귄 부부라고 해도 과언이 아니다,” 라고 윙햄 동물원 관계자는 전했다

Gay penguin couple adopts a baby chick

A gay penguin couple at a British zoo has adopted a chick that had been abandoned by its parents, the Daily Mail reported last week.

According to the news report, the two male Humboldt, one named Jumbs and the other Kermit, have been together for two years now in Wingham Wildlife Park. Ever since the two became an item, the two female penguins which were supposed to be their mates have been left alone.

The gay couple first adopted an egg last year, but it failed to hatch. The second one, however, was a success, and the couple had their baby born on April 12.

The original parents who gave their eggs to the gay couple are Isobel and Hurricane. The female penguin abandoned the egg to find food, and the father refused to incubate the chick as well.

“The gay penguin couple are being such good parents for the 1-month-old penguin. In fact, they are the best penguin parents we have here,” the representative of Wingham Wildlife Park was quoted as saying.
