사람들은 윤종신이 가수인지 프로듀서인지 묻는다. 정체성을 묻는 질문에 그는 간단하게 대답한다. “정체성을 묻는 자체가 촌스러운 것 아니냐. 그냥 그 모두가 윤종신이야” 라고 말한다.

그는 1990년 공일오비의 1집에서 ‘텅빈거리에서’로 대중에서 이름을 알렸다. 계속되는 활동과 함께 4집 ‘부다’와 5징 ‘환생’으로 인기가 급상승했다. 요즘은 작곡에 프로듀싱에 여념이 없다. 자신의 회사에 소속된 ‘투개월’과 ‘신치림’의 프로듀서이다.

하지만 그의 능력은 음악에 국한되지 않는다. 몇 년째 예능 분야에서 MC로 활동해오고 있는 그는 자신을 ‘관찰형 MC’라고 부른다. 그는 MBC ‘논스톱’에 출연할 때부터 남들이 웃기는 지, 안 웃기는 지 관찰했다고 한다. 그 관심을 유지한 게 쌓여 하나의 콘텐츠가 됐다.

“핵심이 되겠다는 생각을 버리면 된다. 지금은 한 사람이 끌고 가는 시대가 아니다.유재석도 원 오브 뎀이다. 유재석이 ‘무한도전’에서 7인 중 자기 역할만 수행하는 데도 존재감이 있지 않나” 이는 예능도 MC 시대에서 프로듀서 시대로 넘어갔음을 의미한다고 했다. 무엇보다 프로그램의 기획과 의도가 중요해졌다.

그는 ‘라디오스타’의 차별성을 다음과 같이 설명했다.

“보통 토크쇼는 게스트의 말을 듣는 것이다. 하지만 ‘라스’는 MC의 말에 반응하는 게스트의 행동을 보는 것이다. 그래서 MC 4명이 역동적으로 꼬는 질문을 던지는 게 필요하다. 토크는 불친절하지만 자막과 편집의 결과물은 불친절하지 않다.”

그는 아직도 꿈을 꾼다. 언젠가는 특화된 예능, 이왕이면 음악 관련 예능을 해보고 싶다고 말하는 그의 예능 도전은 계속된다.

From singer to entertainer, Yoon Jong-shin mounts challenges



Many people wonder if Yoon Jong-shin is a singer or producer. He is in fact both, but he does not like such questions.

“Isn’t a question about identity kind of outdated? All jobs are about myself,” said Yoon in a recent interview.

Yoon originally gained attention from O15B’s song “In Empty Street” in 1990, and then gained popularity with his fourth and fifth albums. Now, he writes songs while producing for duet Two Months (Twogaewol) and Shinchireem, a trio group which he is also in.

Yoon’s job is not limited to music. He has been hosting entertainment shows for years and he himself is a “monitoring emcee,” as he constantly observes others’ reactions.

“A single emcee can no longer lead the show. Even Yoo Jae-suk does not lead the whole (show) but tries to become part of the team. Giving up eagerness to become the core of the team is necessary,” said Yoon.

Yoon also stressed that emcees these days need some elements of producing. He insisted the show’s purpose and plan are more important than ever, and the role of the emcee is getting more crucial.

Yoon hosts “Radio Star” every Wednesday with other three entertainers and he said it’s different from other talk shows.

“In most talk shows, emcees just listen to what guests say. ‘Radio Star’ is different. We see how the guests react to our twisted or mean questions. Although the questions may be mean, the outcome of the edited version is not mean at all,” said Yoon.

The 44-year-old singer said he hopes to host a music-related program in the near future.
