A South Korean Olympic short track speed skating champion who has been suspended from coaching in the United States for allegations of corporal punishment claimed his innocence Thursday, saying U.S. skating officials disciplined him based only on media reports.

Kim Dong-sung, who won the gold in the men's 1,000 meters at the 1998 Nagano Winter Olympics, has been suspended from teachingyoung skaters in northern Virginia amid allegations that he physically abused some of his students. He runs a skating club called DS Speedskating, after his initials.

Last month, The Washington Post newspaper reported that six skaters said Kim abused them or that they saw Kim abuse other skaters in 2010. A seventh came forward later. The skaters told the newspaper that Kim used hockey sticks, skate blade guards, hammers and hand timers to hit them on their bodies, usually in the locker room, where their parents couldn't see.

But in an interview with Yonhap News Agency, Kim said he was angry that U.S. Speedskating, the American governing body of the sport, had reached the decision without giving him a chance to explain himself. Kim said some parents who don't agree with his style of coaching are making groundless accusations.

"I just don't get it. If they wanted to hand down punishment, then they should have checked all sides of the story," said Kim, who will be banned from the U.S. national championships next week.

"They just listened to what parents had to say and suspended me after reading the media accounts," he added. "They should've listened to what I had to say before taking any steps."

In The Washington Post, U.S. Speedskating President Brad Goskowicz was quoted as saying the skaters' accounts were "first-hand."

"These weren't allegations that I heard happened, or I think happened, these were people stepping forward," Goskowicz said.   

The official said a hearing will take place "in the coming weeks," but Kim said the U.S. officials have it all in the wrong order.

"They haven't given me the date," he said. "But it doesn't make sense to have the hearing after handing down the suspension."

Kim, 31, said he will consider taking legal actions, though he also said he didn't want his students to be hurt before all the facts have been confirmed.

"I have never physically punished my students," Kim said. "If that had happened over here, it should've been a matter of police investigation, not suspension. And if I actually have punished them, then why would only seven of them come forward, and a year later at that? There are 30 to 40 students who want to receive my coaching."

Kim said short track speed skating is a contact sport and that coaches are bound to touch or pull skaters' arms to help them with their posture.

"If you call that violent, then I don't know what to say," Kim said. "In sports like swimming, physical contact between coaches and swimmers is inevitable. But do people accuse swimming coaches of sexual abuse?"

Kim moved to the U.S. after retiring from the sport in 2002. In addition to his gold in Nagano, Kim has 12 world titles.   

But Kim is perhaps better known for his disqualification at the 1,500-meter race in the 2002 Olympics, where he had crossed the finish line first but was stripped of the medal for blocking Apolo Ohno of the U.S. (Yonhap News)

지난달 워싱턴포스트(WP) 보도로 불거졌던 쇼트트랙 올림픽 금메달리스트 출신 김동성(31)의 학생 체벌 논란이 3일 미  스피드 스케이팅 연맹의 코치직자격정지 조치로 파문이 커지고 있다.

향후 조사 결과에 따라 코치직 자격박탈의 중징계 가능성까지 거론되고 있다.

논란에 휘말린 김동성은 이날 연합뉴스와의 전화 인터뷰에서 폭행 주장을 부인하면서 "나의 소명도 듣지 않은 일방적인 연맹의 조치를 이해할 수 없다"며 법적.행정적 대응 방침을 강구중이라고 밝혔다.

그는 자신에게 악감정을 가진 일부 학부모들의 음해성 주장과 이를 대서특필한 언론의 여론몰이 압박으로 미 스피드스케이팅 연맹까지 움직이고 있다며 "억울하고 답답하다"고 토로했다.

다음은 김동성과의 일문일답 요지.

--미 스피드스케이팅 연맹으로부터 코치직 자격정지 처분을 통보받았나.

▲어젯밤 이메일을 통해 받았다. 가르치던 학생들을 때렸다는 주장이 제기돼 코치직을 자격정지한다는 것이다.

연맹의 처사를 도대체 이해할 수가 없다. 자격정지같은 처분을 내리려면 조사를 해서 사실관계가 확인된 후 취해야 하는 것 아닌가. 체벌을 당했다는 학부모들의 주장만 듣고, 또  이를 게재한 언론보도만 보고 자격정지 조치를 내렸다. 당사자인 나로부터 소명절차를 듣고 난후 조치를 취해야 하지 않는가.

--조만간 연맹에서 청문절차를 밟겠다고 했다는데.

▲일시는 알려주지 않고 청문절차를 가질 것이라고도 통보해왔다. 자격정지부터 내린 다음 청문회를 하겠다는게 말이 안된다. 선후가 뒤바뀐 것이다.

--자격정지 처분을 받으면 어떤 결과가 초래되나.

▲연맹이 공인한 대회에 코치 자격으로 참가할 수 없다. 당장 오는 11∼13일 위스콘신주 웨스턴에서 열리는 쇼트트랙 국가대표 선발전에 나갈 수 없다. 이번  대회에 내가 가르치는 'DS 스피드스케이팅' 소속 학생 17명이 참가할 예정이었지만 이들이 피해를 보게 됐다.

--향후 대응은 어떻게 할 생각인가.

▲우선 변호사와 만나 법적.행정적 대응 방안을 강구할 것이다. 연맹의  청문절차 등 조사에는 당당히 응할 것이다. 하지만 최종 사실 여부가 확인되지 않은  상태에서 가르치는 학생들이 피해를 입지 말아야 한다. 나도 일방적 주장으로 인한 명예 훼손이 이만저만이 아니다.

--한국 쇼트트랙 금메달리스트 출신 코치라고 미국에서도 주목을 받았는데.

▲연맹의 자격정지 조치 소식을 듣고 알고 지내는 미국 대표팀 선수로부터도 연락이 왔다. 이 친구들도 황당해한다. 국가대표 선발전 출전을 앞두고 있는데,  조사 절차도 없이 자격정지부터 취하는게 말이 되느냐고.

--자격정지 조치 사유는 가르치던 학생들에 폭행을 가했다는 것인데.

▲미국에서 학생을 때리고 폭행했다면 그것은 일찌감치 경찰에 갔어야 할  문제이다. 연맹의 조사가 아니라 경찰 수사사안이다.

거듭 말하지만 학생들을 폭행한 적이 없다. 쇼트트랙 스케이팅은 육체적 스포츠다. 가르치는 과정에서 접촉이 있을 수 있다. 자세를 바로 잡기 위해 학생들의 팔을 잡아 당기고, 발을 밀고 해야 한다. 이것을 폭행이라고 주장하면 할말이 없다. 수영같은 스포츠도 가르치려면 코치의 신체적 접촉이 불가피하다. 이걸 두고 성추행이라고 주장하고 고발하나.

 --연맹은 체벌 피해자가 7명이나 된다고 하는데.

▲익명으로 진정서를 냈다지만 대부분 지난해 봄까지 내가 코치로 있던 클럽의 학부모들로 짐작한다. 내가 상습적으로 체벌을 했다면 왜 7명만 그런 주장을 하고, 그것도 1년이 지나서야 문제를 제기하나. 계속 나에게 배우겠다고 하고 교습을 받는 학생들이 30~40명이나 된다.

나의 코치 방식에 이견을 갖고 헤어진 일부 학부모들의 감정적 주장이라고 생각한다. 아무런 증거도 없이 주장만 하는 것이다. 내가 영어가 짧아서 비속어로  언어적 폭력도 잘 구사할 수 없다. (연합뉴스)
