The U.S. Army has been testing a new weapon that shoots laser-guided lightning bolts to strike its target.

Researchers have tested the new weapon at the Armament Research, Development and Engineering Center (ARDEC) in New Jersey.

According to news reports, the weapon, called a Laser-Induced Plasma Channel (LIPC), imitates the way lightning strikes the ground from thunderclouds.

“We never got tired of the lightning bolts zapping our (simulated) targets,” said George Fischer, the lead scientist on the project.

The charge is produced by emitting a laser pulse which charges the air and forms a destructive bolt of lightning. Just as lightning moves on the path of least resistance, the LIPC charge travels through a laser beam.

Now engineers are developing the prototype for a mobile cannon, though the army has not yet ordered it.

현재 기술자들이 비행선에 장착할 수 있는 이동식 포로 개발 중이나 미 육군은 아직 이 무기에 대한 어떤 요청도 하고 있지 않고 있다.
