위안부 소녀상, 해외 최초로 캘리포니아에 세워져

제2차 세계대전 당시 일본군에 의해 성노예가 된 피해여성을 상징화한 ‘평화의 소녀상’이 미국 캘리포니아주 글렌데일에 세워진다.

이 소녀상은 주한 일본대사관 맞은 편 소녀상과 같은 작가가 똑같이 새로 만든 작품이나 글렌데일 시립 중앙도서관 앞에 세워질 소녀상에는 일본군 위안부 역사를 설명하는 석판이 추가됐다.

‘평화의 소녀상’이 해외에 세워지는 것은 이번이 처음이며, 위안부를 기리는 상징물이 미국 서부지역에 들어서는 것도 처음이다.

이 소녀상의 건립은 지난 2007년 마이크 혼다 (Mike Honda) 미 의원이 발의한 일본군 위안부 결의안 통과를 지원하기 위해 구성된 한인 동포 단체 가주한미포럼이 주도했다.

이 단체는 결의안 의결이 성사되자 캘리포니아 지역 공공부지에 위안부 기림비 건립을 추진해왔다.

현재 뉴욕과 뉴저지 등의 공공부지에 위안부를 기리는 상징물 32개가 세워져 있다.

글랜데일 시정부는 매년 7월 30일을 ‘일본군 위안부의 날’로 지정하는 등 위안부 문제에 관심을 기울여 왔다.

베트남전 참전용사이기도 한 글렌데일 시의회 프랭크 킨테로 (Frank Quintero) 시의원은 지난 4월 서울을 방문해 위안부의 입장에 대한 인식을 높이는데 힘쓰겠다고 약속한 바 있다.

일본 정부는 일부 의원들이 위안부가 필요악이었다는 발언 등으로 전쟁기간 동안의 성노예에 대한 책임을 부인하고 있다.

게다가 아베 신조 총리와 자민당이 최근 선거에서 6년 만에 처음으로 중의원과 참의원 양원에서 집권당을 차지하면서 일본의 민족주의는 더욱 팽배할 것으로 예상된다.

소녀상의 건립 과정에서도 일본계 주민의 거센 반발과 로스앤젤레스 주재 일본 총영사의 압박을 받는 곡절을 겪은 것으로 알려졌다.

Monument to comfort women erected in California

A statue of a girl symbolizing the victims of sexual slavery by the Japanese imperial military during World War II will be unveiled at the City of Glendale in California on Tuesday.

The girl, identical to the one that sits in front of the Japanese Embassy in Seoul, will settle in front of the Glendale Central Library as a reminder of Korean comfort women that still face denial of their ordeal by the Japanese government.

The statue will incorporate a slate to explain the history of the comfort women. This is the first time for the sculpture named “statue of a girl of peace” to be erected overseas, and the first time for a monument to the comfort women to be situated at a public site on the West Coast, organizers said.

The erecting of the installation was led by the Korean American Forum of California.

The forum, comprised of Korean-Americans in California, was formed to support the 2007 House resolution against Japan’s sex slavery submitted by U.S. representative Mike Honda. Upon the passage of the resolution, the forum had been campaigning for a memorial statue in the region.

There are 32 other monuments to the Korean comfort women displayed in public places in New York and New Jersey.

Glendale has been active in acknowledging the movement, and designated July 30 as Korean Comfort Women Day. Glendale Mayor Frank Quintero, a Vietnam War veteran, had promised during his visit to Seoul in April that he would work to raise awareness of the plight of the comfort women.

Japan’s government has been inviting escalating international scrutiny over its attempt to whitewash history, with a number of its leading politicians outwardly denying the country’s responsibility for its wartime sex slavery, such as by saying it was a necessary evil.

Nationalism is expected to continue to prevail in Japan with Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and his ruling bloc recently regaining control of both houses of parliament for the first time in six years.

The installation of the statue has also reportedly been strongly protested by Japanese-Americans and the Japanese consul in Los Angeles.
