Sony, one of the world’s camera powerhouses, said it seeks to climb to the top of the Korean action camera market with its new model the AZ1.

Weighing in at 63 grams, the AZ1 is smaller and lighter than previous models. It is also known as the Action Cam Mini, and is resistant to water, dust and impacts.

Action cameras have been catching on as more people are looking to take clearer and more vivid digital pictures while enjoying the outdoors.

“Action cameras will be more widely used to capture the moments of people’s daily lives as well as those of outdoor activities, such as camping, hiking and surfing,” said an official from the cameramaker at a launching event for the new model in Seoul on Tuesday.

The AZ1 features a 16-megapixel camera sensor, an advanced image stabilization function and a stereo microphone.

A 120-frame-per-second mode allows users to shoot smooth slow-motion videos. With the remote control wrist strap that can be paired with the Mini, users can start shooting remotely, and monitor and delete recorded video clips.

Videos can also be streamed live using online streaming platforms such as Ustream.

“With more people enjoying biking in Korea, Sony’s new action cam could expand into the black box market for bicycles,” said Danielle Lee, head of Sony Korea’s corporate communications department.

Priced at 379,000 won ($355), the Mini can be mounted on backpacks and helmets with straps and holders, which will be sold separately.
